Ed Powell

Case Summary

Ed Powell is a police officer and leader of the Cleveland Police Department‘s anti-lewd telephone crime team. An incredibly brave operative, Ed never gives up on his relentless quest to cleanse the phone lines of lewd and lascivious activity. He is known for his persistent interrogation style, often discounting the suspect’s cries of innocence in favour of continued questioning. Also noted are his trademark stutters (“lummaluh lummaluh”) and trouble handling numerical values. Despite this, Ed Powell continues to be an extremely valuable member of the force, and has discovered several new KPD officers.

Origins and History

Ed Powell was first called with the Springfield Pervert soundboard. This call is the origin of the iconic ‘tape’ Ed plays to establish the seriousness of the situation to suspects. Intent on defending the honour of his district, Ed called the prankster back, who answered with a Bail Bondsman and Sgt. Fields soundboard. Almost all of the non-edited lines on Ed’s soundboard come from these 2 calls.

In 2015, Prank Haller called the Cleveland PD with his own voice, and Ed Powell answered. Notably, Ed sounds much less energetic in the audio this time around. This call is also the origin of Ed’s “Mr. Fred” line, one of the few lines on his soundboard that does not come from the origin call. Ed mentions in the call that the FBI is apparently working on tracing the prankster who made the original phone call to him.

Personal Life

Subsequent calls to Ed Powell in more recent times have revealed more information about him and his life. Operators at the Cleveland PD have confirmed that they are aware of the existence of Ed’s soundboard, and victims will often call the 3rd District to “confirm” that Ed is a legitimate police officer.

Phone calls to the real Ed Powell have been completed in recent times, but mostly end in an exchange of 1 or 2 words before he hangs up. His sister has been successfully called as well, cussing out Kimble before too hanging up promptly.

Ed’s full first name is Edwin – Ed’s twin brother is also called Ed(ward), and works as a Christian radio presenter in Cleveland.

2014 Assault Charge

In 2014, assault charges were filed against Ed Powell; he was also charged with menacing and interfering with civil rights.

The charges related to alleged misconduct by Ed while he was working as a security guard at the Horseshoe Casino in Cleveland, not an incident that occurred while he was on duty as a police officer.

In June 2014, Ed pleaded guilty to a charge of of aggravated menacing and was fined $500. The other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

It is unknown if Ed was relieved of his duties following this incident. He faced a disciplinary hearing after pleading guilty to the charges, and was placed on ‘restrictive duty’ when the charges were filed.

In a tweet from February 2016, Ed said he was “still at the 3rd”. In a subsequent tweet in December 2018, Ed commented on an episode of ‘Blue Bloods’, praising the realism of the show as “a former police officer with 27yrs on the job”.
